BUILD's Wednesday Club Services brings together four opportunities for adults with learning difficulties to build equality, confidence and opportunity.
Launched in 1967 by members of Princes Street United Reformed Church, the Wednesday Club provides over 60 adults with learning difficulties and other disabilities with a weekly facility for social, learning and leisure activities. The group meets at the Church Rooms, at the United Reformed Church in Princes Street, Norwich between 7pm and 9pm on Wednesday evenings.
A programme, decided and run by the members through the MTV (Member to Volunteer Scheme) includes life-skills learning such as cookery, and money management, creative activities, such as drawing, painting, collage and drama workshops, as well as social and leisure activities like Pool, a disco and karaoke run by members and a coffee bar are supplemented by off site opportunities.
An outdoor programme includes visits to local attractions, sailing, theatre visits, sports activities and taking part in local history tours ensures that members integrate into mainstream community activities, initially in a supported group environment, but increasingly so, as independent individuals exercising real choice.
The MTV Scheme runs the club - from setting out tables and chairs, to running the disco and coffee bar, collecting subscriptions, arranging taxis and making sure members feel safe and welcome.
The ''My Time" project is aimed at young adults aged 18-29 providing a monthly social activity in a peer group setting. This is offered countywide, and supports local networks, as well as city centre based activities.
''Awaydays'' is a service that supports individuals, or small groups of people to access independent travel for days out, short breaks or longer holidays. Some activities are run by BUILD, others work where BUILD staff and volunteers support people to access travel experiences through independent commercial providers.
