STEPS is BUILD's advocacy, training and consultancy service where adults with learning difficulties lead, on behalf of their peers, in the delivery of training courses, responses to local or national consultations and in areas where advocacy is required. STEPS members have been involved in various projects including training Occupational Therapy students at the University of East Anglia, and mystery shopping to measure the quality of services to people with learning difficulties. Part of this work was funded by the EU through its European Social Fund via Norfolk's Acorn Grants programme and has helped develop the confidence of STEPS members and increase awareness of learning difficulties issues to service providers in the leisure, retail and public services sectors. This work is aimed at increasing opportunities for employment for people with learning difficulties.

Along with other BUILD members, STEPS are actively involved in much local discussion and decision making groups. These include issues such as housing, employment, training, quality assurance, research and day services reviews.
Some of the other things that take place in STEPS include:
-
Training to our members and volunteers as well as to people from outside of BUILD e.g. medical students
-
Presentations and workshops
-
Guest speakers being invited to talk about issues
-
Looking to make information more accessible
-
Regular support and feedback for its members
-
Social occasions such as BBQ's and Christmas party
