The BUILD Befriends Service brings together adults with learning difficulties, (and other disabilities) with the support of trained volunteers, to enjoy regular social activities on a one to one basis.
Partnerships generally meet about once a month for mutually agreed activities that range from shopping, meals and drinks out, to bird watching, swimming, going to the theatre, or cinema, or whatever the partnerships want to (within reason!!)
It works in two stages, which we call the matching stage and the activities stage.
The ''Matching'' stage works like this:-

We'll arrange a meeting for you with a BUILD Befriends Co-ordinator to explore what sort of activities you want to do, and the sort of person you want to do them with

We'll identify, recruit, take references and train a suitable volunteer who we think matches your needs.

If we can't find a volunteer straight away, we'll invite you to join some supported activities, once a month, with other people waiting for a partnership

We'll talk to you about whether they sound like someone you'd like to meet

We'll talk to the volunteer about you to see if they would like to meet with you

We'll arrange for the two of you to meet each other, with our support

We'll talk to you both about how you felt about each other

If you are both happy, we'll help you arrange up to three activities where we'll come along and help you get to know each other

When you, your new volunteer, and we are happy - we'll let you get on with it - having fun!!
The ''Activities'' stage works like this:-

We'll support you, and the volunteer to arrange one activity a month, that you both agree on.

We'll pay for the volunteer's travelling expenses, and their costs for supporting your chosen activity. You pay for your activity and transport costs from your own money.

We'll have regular contact with you, and the volunteer, to make sure things are working well for you both.

We'll arrange a meeting, at least once a year with you to find out how the partnership is going, and what we can do to make it any better.
